SCHEMATIC OF THE AMPÉRE APPARATUS (1822)
Ampères apparatus for causing a magnet to rotate on its own axisa motion which Faraday had deemed impossible. ZP is a cylindrical magnet immersed to half its length in a beaker of mercury; the small cavity at Z is also filled with mercury, allowing contact to be made with one end of a battery coming from D. GH is a metallic ring linked to the other terminal of the battery through F. When current is applied, the magnet ZP rotates continuously.
